How-To Guides

With VoxOx Call Connect™ for SMS you can make international calls from a mobile phone for just pennies per minute. That’s right – pennies, not dollars!

How to Use VoxOx For Travel Call Connect SMS

Make sure you follow the instructions below carefully to avoid roaming fees by your cell phone carrier. Once you’re setup, all you’ll need is a mobile phone that can text… you’ll be talking to home before you know it.

Before You Travel

  1. Sign up free for VoxOx, and try a regular Call Connect SMS call before following the special travel instructions below
  2. Buy VoxOx calling credit before you go. Visit the online store to purchase Pay as You Go credit. (Tip: Just a few dollars of VoxOx credit is typically sufficient for a short leisure trip.)

When You Arrive at Your Destination

  1. You’ll need to create your own local phone number and mobile device. To do this, simply visit a mobile phone store near your hotel (or a kiosk at the airport), and ask for a local “SIM card” – show them your mobile and make sure the SIM card is compatible. Alternatively, you can just grab a (cheap) text-enabled, prepaid mobile phone from a local carrier.
  2. Once you have your new local phone number, make sure you update it as your authorized phone number to prevent roaming fees from your mobile carrier. You can only send a text to “VoxOx Call Connect” from a mobile number you have authorized through either of the below ways. (Tip: When authorizing your new local number, enter it as if you are dialing it from the U.S.)

There are two ways to authorize your new local mobile number:

Online: Visit my.voxox.com, enter your VoxOx username and password, and select Settings —> Call Connect SMS.

OR:

By Phone: Just dial your own VoxOx® phone number, press the star (*) key, enter your PIN followed by the pound (#) key. Press option 6 for Settings. (Tip 1: PIN code default is the last four digits of your own VoxOx phone number.) (Tip 2: If you have traveled outside of the U.S. and have your free VoxOx iNum® number, you can use it to make this a local call.)

Note: You can only send an SMS to “VoxOx Call Connect” from one authorized mobile number at a time. (Tip: If you need to change your authorized number, follow the steps above.)

Making calls

  1. When you are ready to make a call, send a text message to “VoxOx Call Connect” (1-323-335-5555)* with the number you would like to call in the body of the text message – see examples below. (*Back-up number: 1-323-649-9139)
  2. Once you have sent your text message, wait several seconds and you should get an incoming call with your friend on the line. Say “hello” and start talking!

Examples:

Tip: No matter where you are, when you’re calling a U.S. or Canada number, the number format should be: 1+Area Code+Number (no spaces).
Send To: 13233355555 (“VoxOx Call Connect”)
Message content: 12125555555 (Your friend in the U.S.)

Tip: No matter where you are, when calling phone numbers outside of the U.S. or Canada the number format should be: 011+Country Code + Number (no spaces).
Send To: 13233355555 (“VoxOx Call Connect”)
Message content: 0114402125555555 (Your friend in London)

Additional Tips

If you are unsure what dialing prefix to use in your text message, visit http://www.TimeAndDate.com, click on “International Dialing Codes” and set “United States” in Step 1 and the place where you have traveled to in Step 2. All VoxOx calls originate in the U.S., no matter where you are.

When you initiate VoxOx Call Connect via SMS, you will be charged VoxOx’s per minute calling rates for both legs of the call (the call to your mobile phone and the call to the other person’s phone). For example, if you have a Hong Kong mobile number ($.01/min) and you’re calling a U.S. mobile number ($.01/min), you’ll be charged a total of $.02/min from your VoxOx account. Costs vary by country, click here to view calling rates.

Standard mobile carrier text messaging rates apply. (Tip: When you send a text message to VoxOx Call Connect, you are using your local mobile carrier’s texting rates.)

Successful use of VoxOx Call Connect via SMS is dependent on a variety of factors, including third-party carrier services that we do not control. If you are having trouble with this feature, please submit a customer support ticket online.

If you decide not to purchase a local SIM card or pre-paid mobile phone when you arrive at your destination, you may incur international roaming costs by your mobile carrier.

Happy travels!
