How-To Guides
You can make super cheap long-distance phone calls from your own mobile phone with VoxOx Call Connect™ for SMS.
In most countries, inbound calls to your mobile are free. So, the way this works is we turn your outbound calls into inbound calls!
Below you’ll learn how to authorize your mobile phone for this feature and also how to initiate callback calls. Keep in mind that you can only authorize one mobile phone at a time for this service.(Tip: If you need to change your authorized number, repeat the steps below.)
First an Important Question…
If you were to receive an inbound call right now on your mobile phone, would you have to pay a roaming charge? (For example, did you bring your U.S. phone with you on an international trip?)
If you answered “yes”, check out our special travel instructions. If not, keep reading!
Getting Started
- If you haven’t already, save a new friend, “VoxOx Call Connect”, on your mobile phone as: 1-323-335-5555.* This is the number you’ll always be texting to initiate calls with this service. It does not change. (*Back-up number: 1-323-649-9139).
- Before you can use this service, you must authorize the mobile phone number you plan to use for initiating calls. You can only send a text to “VoxOx Call Connect” from your authorized number. If you’re using the mobile phone with which you verified your identity during the sign up process, you don’t need to authorize a new number.(Tip: When authorizing your new local number, enter it as if you are dialing it from the U.S., regardless of where you’re located.)
There are two ways to authorize your number:
Online: Visit http://my.voxox.com, log in with your username and password. Select the My Account —> Settings —> Call Connect SMS and follow the instructions.
OR:
By Phone: Just dial your own VoxOx® phone number, press the star (*) key, enter your PIN followed by the pound (#) key. Press option 6 for Settings. (Tip 1: PIN code default is the last four digits of your own VoxOx phone number.) (Tip 2: If you are outside of the U.S., you can make this a local call by activating your free VoxOx iNum® number.)_
That’s it – the tricky part is done! Now you can place cheap international calls from your authorized mobile phone by just sending a text message. See how below….
Making Calls
- When you are ready to make a call, simply send a text message to “VoxOx Call Connect” from your authorized mobile phone. In the body of the text message, type the number you would like to call – see examples below.
- Once you have sent the text message, wait several seconds and you should get an incoming call with your friend on the line. Say “hello” and start talking!
Examples:
Tip: No matter where you are, when you’re calling a U.S. or Canada number, the number format should be: 1+Area Code+Number (no spaces).
Send To: 13233355555 (VoxOx Call Connect)
Message content: 12125555555 (Your friend in the U.S.)
Tip: No matter where you are, when calling phone numbers outside of the U.S. or Canada the number format should be: 011+Country Code + Number (no spaces).
Send To: 13233355555 (VoxOx Call Connect)
Message content: 0114402125555555 (Your friend in London)
Additional Tips
If you are unsure what dialing prefix to use in your text message, visit http://www.TimeAndDate.com, click on “International Dialing Codes” and set “United States” in Step 1 and the place where you have traveled to in Step 2. All VoxOx calls originate in the U.S., no matter where you are.
While on a Call Connect call, you will be charged VoxOx’s per minute calling rates for both legs of the call (the call to your mobile phone and the call to the other person’s phone). So, if you have a U.S. number ($.01/min) and you’re calling a Hong Kong number ($.01/min), you’ll be charged a total of $.02/min from your VoxOx account. Costs vary by country, click here to view calling rates.
Standard mobile carrier text messaging rates apply. (Tip: When you send a text message to VoxOx Call Connect, you are using your local mobile carrier’s texting rates.)
Successful use of VoxOx Call Connect via SMS is dependent on a variety of factors, including third-party carrier services that we do not control. If you are having trouble with this feature, please submit a customer support ticket online.
